Patna,A World Bank project worth the initial cost of $ one billion (Rs 10,000 crore) to clean up Ganga in India may change the condition of river in Patna and elsewhere in Bihar.
The river, which gets reduced to a drain in non-monsoon months, has drifted northward at many places in the state, especially Patna.
A recent meeting between minister of state for environment and forest, Jairam Ramesh, and World Bank Group President, Robert B Zoellick, announced the Bank’s commitment to explore the provision of long term financing and knowledge assistance for this critical national programme involving the Ganga basin states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. The focus is on cleaning up the river and conservation activities.
