World Bank to come to Ganga’s rescue

Patna,A World Bank project worth the initial cost of $ one billion (Rs 10,000 crore) to clean up Ganga in India may change the condition of river in Patna and elsewhere in Bihar.
The river, which gets reduced to a drain in non-monsoon months, has drifted northward at many places in the state, especially Patna.
A recent meeting between minister of state for environment and forest, Jairam Ramesh, and World Bank Group President, Robert B Zoellick, announced the Bank’s commitment to explore the provision of long term financing and knowledge assistance for this critical national programme involving the Ganga basin states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. The focus is on cleaning up the river and conservation activities.

Rural jobs scheme gets a green touch in Bihar

Patna, Here's one place where the rural jobs scheme is scripting a green success story. Around 60,000 people in Bihar's Tirhut division are busy looking after 12 million plants and are being paid for it.
"More than 60,000 people, mostly the poorest of the poor, are looking after 1.2 crore plants every day in the Tirhut division comprising half a dozen districts and earning wages for it under the NREGA," S.M. Raju, Tirhut division commissioner, told IANS on phone.

Bihar government ordered to appoint 35,540 trained teachers

New Delhi, Dec 9 : The Supreme Court Wednesday ordered the Bihar government to appoint 35,540 primary school teachers as per their seniority based on the year they secured their Bachelor of Education or Bachelor in Teaching degrees.
A bench of Justice Altmas Kabir and Justice H.L. Dattu gave the order on a joint lawsuit by thousands of professionally qualified teachers of Bihar, who sought contempt to court proceedings against the state government for not keeping its word given to the apex court in 2007 for appointing them.

IGNOU to establish 400 training centres in Bihar

New Delhi- For improve educational facilities in Bihar, which has the lowest literacy level in India, and launch market driven vocational courses for its youth, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is setting up 400 training centres in the state to train students and government officials.
The IGNOU training centres “will be equipped with computer labs to provide distance education through information technology to the remotest parts of the state”, said an official of the university, one of the largest in the world.
In addition, “it is estimated that during the year 2009-10, 25,000 government officials will be trained by the IGNOU,” the official said.
The Human Development Index (HDI) value of Bihar has been increasing but it still lags far behind other major states of India. Bihar figures 13th in the HDI value among 15 major states of India. Bihar, with 47 percent literacy – much lower than nation average of 66 – is ranked lowest in the country.
“These programmes will not only enable them become competitively skilled, on par with the workforce of other states, but also help Bihar to significantly improve its Human Development Index,” the official said.
The state government signed an agreement for implementation of state sponsored projects with the IGNOU, called ‘Samarth’. IGNOU has been chosen as the knowledge partner of the state.
The IGNOU has been training thousands of primary school teachers in the state.

Nitish talks for security

PATNA — Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today said he was keeping a close watch on the situation in Ludhiana where workers clashed with police.
“I had a telephonic talk with Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal and asked him to provide security to workers from Bihar,” Nitish told reporters here.
Badal had assured to provide security to Biharis working in Punjab, the chief minister said. He also asked people from the state to maintain calm.
Workers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh set afire some vehicles and clashed with police, in protest against alleged police inaction on a complaint of one of their fellow workers who was allegedly robbed by some persons, forcing authorities to clamp curfew in Ludhiana on Thursday.

Goods train derails in Bihar

Patna, Dec 7 ,2009 total 26 bogies of a goods train were derailed in Bihar's Sasaram district Monday, disrupting rail traffic on the busy Mughalsarai-Howrah route. No injuries were reported, police said.
The accident occurred near Shivsagar railway station and several trains have been diverted, said Dilip Kumar, the chief public relations officer of East Central Railway.
